What is Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is a condition of high blood pressure in pregnancy and affects 254,000 – 300,000 pregnancies in Australia every year. There are 7 mother deaths and 1,000 baby deaths per year and the effects on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women at roughly double the rate of other women.

Preeclampsia is one of the largest causes of premature birth and the complications that go with prematurity such as cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, learning disability and developmental delay; and has significant ongoing health effects for our community including ongoing high blood pressure and cardiovascular and renal conditions, including stroke and death.
